So just finished DMing my first campaign of LMoP but I wanna DM IWD but the consensus is it takes some getting used to. I've thought about running Dragon of Icespire Peak after but i REALLY dont like the whole getting quests via mission board as it feels a bit too videogamey. My question to those of you who DMed IWD should I DM it after LMoP? I watched SlyFlourush's video guides for it on Youtube. I know IWD like Icespire Peak is a sandbox and I know DMing Icespire Peak would be better before but like I said I REALLY dislike the way you get quests from it.
Considering Lost Mines of Phandelver ends at level 5 and Icewind Dale: Dragon of Icespire Peak starts at level 1, will you start the campaign with new characters? It's a good adventure, ideally starting at 1st level to start low and explore wide.
I recommand Sly Flourish suggestions i used many of them in order to have the my party have both starting quests and a number of other quests from various Ten Towns and the Dale i pre-selected until other plotlines can be dealt with in later chapters because it can drag too much to use them all. I also used his main goal suggestion alternative as well. I connected some of the town quests, used others that pointed to next plotlines too, all while always trying to keep multiple options available to them so it never felt railroady even though the sandbox wasn't as wide open as it appeared.
Funny enough, Im DMing them in the opposite order. We just finished RotFM, which was a doozy to DM and starting the new version of lost mines now. RoftFM was fun but very demanding. A tonnn to homebrew to connect the logic/story dots as a DM.
In hindsight, to help with all that most easily, I would have your PC's focus on their reasoning to be up there because the game gives your PC's very very little reason to stay invested throughout the whole story.
Also, a big factor/enemy in RoftFM is the cold/environment, which can be very boring for some players so I'd bring that up and adjust.
