So, it's my first encounter that I'm putting together. I'm inserting an encounter that's going to serve as the BBEG fight, so I want it to be difficult and epic - but beatable. For the party, they'll all be L13, with the following makeup:
Fairy Gloomstalker Ranger.
Goliath Totem Warrior Barbarian (Bear).
Half-Elf Life Cleric.
Fire Genasi Draconic Sorcerer.
Possibly a Kobold Psi Blade Rogue.
They don't know it yet, but due to their activities throughout their campaign, they've amassed a large support group who I can have charge in to turn the tide of the battle if it gets out of hand. Ideally, that's what would happen.
My thoughts was to have a Pit Fiend guarding the way to their goal and try to deter them (knowing them and having watched their antics over the last two years, I know they'll turn it into a fight). I was going to have the Pit Friend summon allies, but I must have misremembered its CR because CR20 is pretty high.
So, any thoughts on what the Pit Fiend could summon to make this a brutal but winnable fight? I'm happy to modify Statblocks and I have access to most of the official books, and ideally they'll be creatures that would work with/under a Pit Fiend.
Or perhaps replace the Pit Fiend with something else...

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Hm... level 13s and it's the first encounter you've run for the party? Honestly, you could probably use two pit fiends and have it still be okay, level 13 PCs are absurdly powerful (though without significant experience with the particular characters and players, it's hard to guess exactly how powerful), but the obvious option is pit fiend (summoner variant).
We've been playing for quite a while (two years), but we've been running a published adventure (Rime of the Frostmaiden). I've been adjusting encounters, but that's been on the fly (they seem to be breezing through this...let's add some HP...they're struggling, let's have a fortuitous event...kind of thing). Generally, I've been buffing the monsters to provide a challenge. This will be the first time I'll be building an encounter from scratch.
