First off, I ran my first session and it went well. The only thing is I am looking for someone who can kind of be an e-mail buddy so I can get some guidance and feedback on my overall story.
My players are all new except for one, so my story doesn’t have to be that original as far as D&D standards go. But I do want it to be gripping, engaging and consistent. I want to get some suggestions on where to take the story, and how to introduce a big bad villain.
Here’s my plot so far:
The adventurers have been hired to rescue a wealthy lord’s daughter who has gone missing. In the local town there have been vicious attacks that seem as though it’s been done by some beast. On top of that bodies have gone missing from the local cemetery. A piece of her dress was found near some ruins outside of town. One adventuring party had been sent already but did not return.
The party agreed to help the lord, and investigate the ruins in search of the missing girl.
Upon leaving the manor, a gardener gave them some local gossip. That the missing girl had been hanging out with questionable people prior to her disappearance, a traveling band of *****s. On top of that , she had been staying out until wee hours of the morning in her nightgown, as he spotted her coming home at dawn a few times.
The adventurers moved on to the ruins. They found a room in a Watchtower with two books, one on lycanthropy, one on necromancy. Then they faced a group of undead and defeated them.
The next session will have them meet the missing girl, who has been kept in a cage. If they free her then a new NPC will arrive, an Elven Mage, who tells them they made a mistake. The prisoner was held captive because she is dangerous, and the Mage was trying to find a “cure.” Then a boss battle ensues with the girl transforming into a werewolf.
if she is defeated she reverts to her human form, but unconscious.
The Elven Mage will explain that the prisoner fell for a ***** man, who was in fact a werewolf. That’s how’s she got infected. The Elven Mage is a guardian of the town, and had not only captured the infected werewolf girl, but captured undead that had spring up from the local cemetery, so they can be used to keep people away while she worked on a cure.
The Elven Mage will give two potential quests: to investigate beneath the cemetery to see what’s been causing the undead to rise, or to go after the traveling band of werewolf *****s. In either case they are both connected to the main villain of my campaign.
I am thinking about making two sub-bosses: a necromancer, and a werewolf bandit captain, who both answer to a powerful dark wizard(or lich) who is trying to cross over from the shadowfell.
Sounds to me like we are both in a pretty similar situation. I played DnD bi-weekly for approximately 4-months with a group as a PC and now am writing and DMing my own adventure.
Fortunately, I have some roleplay writing background from an exceptionally old online RPG. The only thing I would really like is someone who is not involved in my game or our other game to bounce ideas off of. PM me if you want to be DM pen pals. I will offer some constructive criticism/ideas to you later this evening as I must finish my professional obligations before I fall too deep into the DnD writing hole.
i had a similar level of experience. I played a player in a previous campaign for about 9 months. We didn’t meet as often as you, though I was the most dedicated player in our group and always really into the game. I have some writing experience as well! But not specifically for an RPG. For months I worked on writing a fantasy novel, and studied books on story structure. Never finished the novel though. Lol
Yeah I’d love to bounce ideas off of you. I only have one other DM friend but he is usually pretty busy.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I used to be an adventurer like you, til’ I took an arrow to the knee.
And I'm also pretty new. However as a writer, I do love plot creation. What I've been doing with my players is dropping in a small hint— It can be anything, really- an object, a strange person, whatever... and then later I can find an explanation for it if I haven't already. It makes for a nice set up, and it also gives me inspiration for later. Have the party wanting to know more. At least that's my approach. It's been working so far. But feel free to message me if you just want to discuss ideas. I love plot, and I've been looking for this kind of connection myself.

Yours platonically,
