My party is on a mission to trap the 4 elder elementals in containment gems to power a weapon to take down the BBEG
They will be taking on the Elder Tempest here soon and I wanted to make the fight no so much about just nuking it down but about weathering “the storm” and wanted to bounce my idea off other DM’s. So here it is: I am going to have the party make preception checks to find the Tempest in the storm but instead of just smashing it and going I was thinking of having them use the crystal they have to syphon off energy from the storm, but only the person with the containment gem can do that. I was also going to let the person with the gem absorb some of the lightning dmg that they take into the gem, and give them a special reaction that if they can hit with an attack as a reaction when the tempest moves through their area to syphon off some more of the storms energy.
I have it set up so that to find the Tempest in the storm is perception(vision) and will be made with disadvantage until the storm has lost 1/3 of its power. If the party wants to tell the person with the gem it will be a perception (hearing) with disadvantage until the storm has lost 2/3 its power.
I was also going to throw in a handful of air myrmidons for the party to have to deal with and for the players not helping with the gem.
I like the idea! Not being able to see something that titanic is terrifying.
I would make sure that the players who don't have the gem have something interesting to do so that the fight doesn't feel like only the person with the gem matters.
