Two of my players' characters died recently at level 2. It was almost a TPK in actuality but for a few lucky rolls. They asked that particular mementos be saved by the party, an amulet and small orb. I am thinking it might be fun to have the souls of each trapped in these. Or maybe one of them, and then the warlock's may be with his patron.
My question is there any kind of mechanic for this, or would it be more like just creating a sentient magic item? Thank you.
There's no mechanic for this specifically, as DM you can make any ruling you see fit. The dead soul could become a sentient magic item if you want. Otherwise there are similar effect existing that could be used as inspiration;
You don't necessarily need to explain it rule-wise, you could even have the dead soul trap in an item often coming out for short time as a Ghost, Poltergeist or Will-O-Wisp either when summoned, or just randomly.
