Hey all, My players and I have gone through the first chapter of HOTDQ and I just got the book for Dragon Heist, which seems like a much more interesting storyline to HTODQ. After Greenest, how would you go about transitioning into the start of that module?
We're using the milestone system for experience, so I'm able to let them go through the first chapter of Dragon Heist a bit more powerful and have them have to wait a touch longer til they level again, I'm just trying to think of a way to change up the main storyline without a huge suspension of disbelief.
Waterdeep is South of Greenest, and all those Gold Dragons stored away there would make a very handsome treasure for the Queen of Dragons. Maybe a cultist lets it slip that they are going there to seek out the treasure in the name of Tiamat and the PC's just follow the trail to Waterdeep to stop them from recovering it.
This seems to trouble me as a new DM to 5E. As a player, I wouldn't want to start over if I didn't have to, but can also appreciate why it is easier for a DM to have the players start new characters. I suppose one could say that, as a player, this gives you an opportunity to try something new. However, If I spent an entire adventure leveling to where I was, I would be reluctant to start anew.
I would just keep playing untill you reach one of the larger cities in the HODQ and ROT module. There you can use the Dragon Heist as a side quests, modify it to fit with the overall theme of Tiamat and the Dragon cult. Not that difficult to modify one of the 4-5 bad guys to have some motives that benefit the Dragon Cult. Or have them be more devillish in nature to foreshadow side content for ROT. Where There are devils trying to aid in getting Tiamat out of Avernus and other devil factions trying to keep her tied down. Where there are devils there are demons for the blood war. So lots of things you can do to modify the Dragon Heist to fit with some modifications without going too far off track of the original modules you want to run. As for the Vault in Dragon Heist...well the Dragon Cult is gathering loot to create a dragon hoard worthy of Tiamat when she arrives. So tying them in is easy.
Once my group finishes up Red Hand of Doom, has a few months down time, then go to do Rise of Tiamat. I plan to modify that module to death adding the Dragon Heist and Thunder Giant modules in as side content with tie ins to end game Blood War content.
Also it doesn't have to be in Waterdeep. It can be in any large city that you pass through in the Swordcoast to make it fit better.

Any ideas?

Waterdeep is north of Greenest.
Regardless, my suggestion is to just start over with the new module.

I wouldn't be having them start over, they keep their characters :) they're only level 2 so far, all that has happened is them saving Greenest
