I am new, didn't know about the worlds and stuff in D&D. In summary, do you guys use the them? I hear people base their stories on official campaigns, but I'm not doing that. I apologize is this sounds a little dumb, but I didn't want to make a MAJOR mistake.
If you like world building, go ahead and create your own world from scratch! The official campaigns are so that the DM won't spend a while designing an entire campaign. Basing it off something official gives you the ability to use premade lore and history, so as I said before, it is less time consuming. I personally like being able create my world the way I see fit.
You can base your campaign on your own stuff. It will likely be appreciated by your players. Folks use existing/published content because it is rich and familiar, i.e. much of the work is done. But homebrew offers...something more!
