So as i was reading everything about the first level, and i came across the little box of horrors section and how you can obtain the heart in the box and that was straight forward and how its a instant kill if players attune to it. then later you find the dead mage who the heart belongs to and how the mage asks for his heart back after you use speak with dead. but then doesnt say anything more after that about what happens if the heart is returned. so my question is, is it up to the GMs discretion to choose what the, if any, reward is whether it be an item, a secret or just bonus Xp?
i was thinking of rewarding Xp for returning his heart, but if my PCs had his heart before using "speak with dead" to ask him questions, instead of asking them to retrieve his heart, the mage would tell the players where he hid his spellbook and staff on floor 9 before he was captured, tortured and killed.

Pretty much yeah.
