Hey D&D Beyond! I recently just created a new forum for post-by-post Roleplay, and am having trouble coming up with custom class abilities; unique magic skills; and a leveling system! Because all RPG's need some sort of leveling system. I was wondering if you guys have some pre-made tips and guides out there for creating easy to use classes, races, magic, and leveling systems out there! Cuz it all seems overwhelming, but I'm hoping that I can get some guidance from fellow roleplayers like myself to help me out please?
I'd greatly appreciate it, and if you want some info about the site you can always PM me! Or hit me up in Discord: ChrisGaming98#4147
Are you trying to create a totally new RPG, or some sort of rule system on top of 5e? It certainly sounds like you're doing some deep customization if this is a 5e variant rule set.
If this is brand new, my advice would be to study the various systems that are out there. There are a lot of different systems and mechanics out there for mining, and inspiration. And - for the record - if this is a totally separate/new RPG then, no - not all RPGs need a leveling system, or even classes. Chaosium uses ( used? ) a classless percentile skill system in place of both classes and levels.
If you're looking to customize 5e, then I used this guide for building custom races. This gentleman has put together a point-buy race design system which works reasonably well - although you'll likely need to expand the list of abilities for things you want in your races.

My forum is brand new to say the least. Started in Summer and have a few campaigns in mind that I'd like to start running (after more people start joining of course!). I can customize D&D 5e, and that guide looks tremendously helpful thank you! Will look into Chaosium as well! :)

Thanks for taking your time to read this thread,
Yours truly,
Chris!
I'm somewhat confused.

You're welcome.
To be clear - Chaosium is a game publisher. Call of Cthulhu is probably their best known RPG - easy to find examples of it.
