Hi, im currently DM ing a group of 5. One of my players is part of the Brawlers leauge, and dreams of participating. I would like to let him do that. the only problem is how to make it interesting for the rest of my players. Since its a leauge it will be nessesary for several fights. ( yes Im using Mattew Mercers Brawlers leauge, in the Tal'dorei campain guide)
The easiest thing is to have 6 vs 6 team fights. Everyone gets to participate and nobody is bored.
Problem is that i want to have a 1 vs 1 option too. But I cant see how i can hold the interest of the rest of the party,
Do you have an idea how short down combat, maybe? Give the other players ways to help their party member?
I also want to present them with an option to bet on the other participants (NPC) any smart ways for me to incorperate odds, and how to decide which of the NPCs that win?
If any of you have experiences with DMing fighting rings or other things that are relevant I'd love to hear it.
I love those kinds of pit fighting scenarios, but I have encountered the same problem.
The easiest way is to describe the combat in visceral detail drawing your players, I know however that there are only so many ways you can describe a face being bashed in.
Here are some mechanical things I found helpful:
1. Faster combat:
Either reduce the combatants hit points (divide by 3 or 5) if you want to still fight to the knock out...
... or...
introduce a sort of point system, for example 5 points to win, normal hit = 1 point, critical hit =2. Only makes sense if you don't fight until knockout and can be unbalanced, because dodge tanks would have a significant advantage.
2. Involving the party
One great way would be to allow them to inspire their friend through cheering or more creative means or distract his enemy, granting advantage and disadvantage on the next attack respectively.
I would allow them to use whatever magic or other abilities they have as well, as long as they don't get caught, critical role has great examples of this.
