Hey guys I need some help with creating a hook for a campaign.
Some background on the adventure:
The party all attend the same campus, and it will be the location for the adventure. One day during a early clear sky morning, A giant crystal crash landed in the middle of the campus quad. The impact sent out a wave of energy and everyone was hit by it. The wave of energy effects poeple differently, for some it turned them into the undead, others monsters or beast that can be found in the MM, for the party it gave them thr powers and abilities to become heros for this adventure. In addition to this wave of energy a bright beam of light was shot into the sky that created a large translucent dome around the campus. Things can enter but they can't leave, and those that do enter get changed by the magical energy immediantly.
The main goal of the group: obviously to eascape this dome, as tremors have started to tear the land apart.
The obstacle: the crystal, the thing keeping the trapped inside the dome, has become buried in basically a black tar mansion where the BBEG lives, and there are a series of spires that lead the group to different levels of the mansion to get to the crystal at its center. These spires are locked and can only be opened with a key. Each key can be found in a different part of campus, guarded by some kind of creature.
What I have of the hook so far: The group comes across maybe a zombie or another low level creature that has the key to enter the main door into the mansion.
Things are still being worked out, main the location of the keys and what they open, but those points won't matter if I don't have a good hook for the players to want to go into this mansion and leave this place. this adventure is suppose to mainly have dashes of humor due to the location, and some hints of seriousness.
I assume, from your description, that this sort of game is taking place in the "real world" where your PCs happen to be at for various reasons when the weird crystal crashes down and causes things to go weird.
Some things to consider:
Do you have a campus map? Some locations could provide various tools or other aid, but also be infested with themed monsters. Example: The biology lab now has mutated animals running around, or the chem lab is beset by ooze monsters and smoke mephits.
Are there other people unaffected by the magical radiation that need saved or at least moved to a secure location within the dome?
