I'm home-brewing my first setting and a player has expressed interest in playing a cleric. While I'm open to them creating their own deity if they'd like, I want to be prepared to offer them a deity if they'd rather not. All deities will have the same level of information, but I know a cleric will need to know more than just their deity's name.
Depending on the skill, and imagination of your player you might get away with just a name and a domain. Let the character tell some campfire stories about their deity and as the game progress, when the story warrants it maybe a holy day is coming up and let the player make up the particulars of said holy day.
For world building why as the dm do I need to do all the work? Let the players add to the world, if you don't like what they add it doesn't have to be true, but a player adding to your world in any way will make it breathe for the players, and make them part of it, and invested in it.
The domain should be the springboard for coming up with ideas. Have a conversation with the player to think about why they are a cleric in this domain, what functions clerics of this domain serve in society, and what kind of rules or ethics or ideals this domain might espouse. The deity needs to be thought of in the context of the pantheon you are envisaging for your world. One often overlooked factor is whether the deity is identified as male or female (or something else), as this can shape the connotations of what the religion might involve.
Thank you both! I'll definitely speak with my player and see what they come up with. In a way I could craft the deity around what they come up with that sounds good, while also having truths come out as well to spice things up.

If you are not particular about your deities, you can borrow a pantheon from another mythology.
