I'm going to start running LMoP next week. I have a question about this:
"In the unlikely event that the goblins defeat the adventurers, they leave them unconscious, loot them and the wagon, then head back to the Cragmaw hideout. The characters can continue on to Phandalin, buy new gear at Barthen’s Provisions, return to the ambush site, and find the goblins’ trail."
If they've been looted, how do they "buy new gear?"
I don't think it means immediately - it's just giving the most likely store for the party to buy new provisions to try again if they're defeated. Basically saying 'if they fail at the first hurdle, not all is lost - there's a town just along the road, with a store they can use to stock up.'
If you're particularly concerned about this, then perhaps have the party be able to keep hold of a few trinkets they can sell, or not everything from the wagon is looted, as four goblins can only carry so much - leaving some of the supplies left for the party to take to Barthen, for a reduced payment.
All that said, I've run LMoP for various groups quite a few times. When it says 'the unlikely event', it means it. If the party is even a little experienced, they're very unlikely to struggle with the first encounter. If they're brand new, I tend to use the encounter as more of a tutorial, to introduce the ambush mechanics, and let the players get a feel for combat: when one or two of the goblins go down, I tend to have the others flee. That also highlights the goblin trail back to Cragmaw Hideout. I've never had to worry about the entire party being knocked unconscious.
And you can always have one of the shopkeepers lend the party some basic weapons and stuff, in exchange for promising to recover the stolen goods from the goblins. Perhaps then level all the players up from 1 to 2 before they fight any more goblins...

Another work around could be that one of the characters had a few GP hidden on themselves and have the Goblins "miss" the hidden location. They are greedy, but not terribly bright. Or, perhaps, they were more concerned with getting the wagon and skipped looting the party all together. The party can then recover it in the cave with all the other supplies.
