For people who play in person but use a laptop, I thought I'd mention that one thing you can do to share/show images to players: If you have a tablet or phone, there are nice apps that let you treat your tablet/phone as a second monitor. So can make that visible (it's nice if you have a stand that you can put in front of your DM screen or laptop, and then anything you want your players to see, you can just drag onto that screen. I found a particular app that worked well for me, but I won't mention it unless someone asks, since (even though I'm not affiliated with them and only found this yesterday) I don't want to be seen as advertising.
For those who are more digitally inclined, do you have a nice solution for sharing digital images with players?
I find this works well for me, because the more I do on the computer, the less I lose.
We play through TableTop Simulator and Discord, so, it's really easy to share just about anything. I can copy/paste an image into Discord, or load it onto a tile in TTS. When we were playing at my house, I had built an internal wiki that I could put pictures in so everyone would have access to them, if they needed them, as well as hyperlinked character sheets so important rules were just a click away.
I notice that I share more visual aids through Role20 and such when playing with an online group.
For the group at the table barely if any is used. Some ambient lighting and fitting sounds combined with describing environments well enough for players to create their own imagery is all I need. Images that I do have are more for me. So that I get an idea of what I want to describe. Only thing actually being projected on the wall is when there is a battle and we need a battlemap.
