So I am coming off of a Green Hag coven encounter in which the party decimated them, some Ogre's and Goblins; I want to put the fear back into them a little bit seeing as how they have been steamrolling the last few encounters I've put in front of them, I need a little bit of help with getting an idea for a quick side quest adventure that takes place around a mountain (that does not involve the underdark or a dragon) to put them in an encounter that will fear their characters mortality, to give you an idea they are all level 6 adventurers that consist of a Kensei Monk, an EK Fighter, A (Recently) one handed Hexblade warlock, a Divine Soul Sorcerer, and a Glamour Bard; now most of their alignments lean towards being good characters if that helps.
2 or 3 Stone Giants...leaning towards 3. Their HP totals and Multi-Attacks mean that the party will have a huge issue with the tried and true tactic of "Pick one Enemy at a Time and Mow It Down!" if they are smart they will run. If they fail to run, have one of the Giant's whistle and summon the trained pack of Dire Wolves that were hunting the elk in the valley just behind the Party. Now, they are sandwiched between two foe types. One has fewer hit points, but that Trip attack is a bear to deal with.
Consider maybe this spider-themed side-quest. It's mostly just about adjusting the number of active monsters in the adventure to turn it to from easy to deadly. Adjusting the first encounter from 5 of the 15 Giant Spiders to 10 will make the encounter "hard" for a group of five 6th level characters. The final encounter can have the Drider and 4 or more Giant Wolf Spiders to make for a surprisingly deadly encounter. If you want to mix it up even more, just swapping out some of the spider monsters with Phase Spiders or a pair of Ettercap would be enough to push things over the edge. Just remember to keep up the tension as the Wolf Spiders keep popping out to try to ambush the party from hidden hole and fleeing to try again. Make the Drider play smart and try to avoid direct confrontation for as long as possible.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
http://kobold.club/fight/#/encounter-builder This is a great encounter building tool. It allows you to select party size and level, difficulty of the encounter, location of the encounter, and the type of creature you want the party to face. Then on the side bar you can choose random (difficulty) and it creates an encounter for you. It even tells you where to find the creatures to look up their stat blocks and you can choose the source material that it looks through in case you don't have all the books. I hope this helped.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
A mountain houses a city build into its surface like the ancient city of Petra. Deep inside is an Medusa. Then flesh out the mountain to include Yeti's and even an Ettin. Inside the city can be Phase Spiders a Basilisk or Bulette. Re-flavor some Yuan-ti to be gorgons that are a cult of the Medusa. Make up a nice story to fit it all together and off you go.

When flashing out the city have some oozes. And perhaps some ideas from older converted monsters such as...
