My adventurers have somehow managed to turn a two-month campaign into a war between two nations and are about to partake in an epic battle. They'll be on the ground as skirmish troops, not leading anything.
One is a lvl 6 Goliath Fighter Champion and the other is a lvl 7 Tortle druid (Moon).
I need help with two things: enemies and pacing. I want them to start out like they're Braveheart, slaughtering the fodder left and right. But I want it to scale up to harder foes, until they have a good challenge before the baddies at the end. Can y'all help with the pacing (how many rounds of easy & intermediate) so it doesn't go too long and I don't kill them until they face the army's captain?
I would suggest drawing a map of the battlefield and giving them a goal to aim for - Example:
1: Open with the siege. Chaff attack, they fight the chaff, everyone feels powerful.
2: The leader shouts to them "You two, stop that tower!". a siege tower is rolling forward, and between them and it there is a giant/troll/suitable enemy for a proper fight.
3: They have 5 turns to stop the tower, before the leader shouts that they need to intercept the battering ram heading for the gates. Progress is slow through the chaff, they may need to get creative.
4: They have 3 turns before the ram gets to the gates, and 2 more before it breaks them. They also have only 4 turns before they are needed somewhere else.
Try to gauge it by a realistic expectation, and be flexible with the timings.
I actually really like Thoruk's idea - but I get the feeling this is an open battlefield?
But the players on the flank. Away from the general melee, but have them face realistic challenges ... like, hostile skirmishers with trained attack dogs harassing friendly archers, pursuing survivors, meeting a counter attack, taking on the enemy archers, reacting to cavalry descending to defend the bows, when all that is done, circle to hit the command tent .. or something.
