So im playing with 4 of my friends. there are 2 important players to my dilemma. 1 of which is playing an aasimar and another is a prince in disguise who ran away from his kingdom because he didn't want to marry someone he didnt love.
For most of the campaign the prince character is looking for the newspaper or some kind of news outlet and he asks me every session if there's anything in the paper. I kept saying hey that one prince is missing just to him as he's the only one looking at the paper. one day I told him they found that prince. obviously he was shocked. i was having the fake prince be someone that had the mask of many faces looking to score in the royal family. Fake prince even hired some guys to try to kidnap my player so he could be interrogated in secret when people start asking questions. the party decides to look into this and this is where things go wrong.
the aasimar player is a paladin and has masks for his religion. after a failed persuasion roll to get in the castle to advocate his religion. He asks the real prince character where his room was and flies through the window, alone and attacks the "fake prince". fake prince cries for help as he's being attacked by my player. as the guards barge in the room surrounding both the fake prince and aasimar player, the player has forced the fake prince to show himself or be killed. so some guards saw their prince take off his mask and the aasimar holding a sword to him. both were taken and while this is happening 2 of the players were able to escape(one being the real prince) one was caught all attacking the guards down by the gate. bells ringing. they were surrounded and taken. thats where the session ended.
My problem is.... I don't know what to do with my 2 players that were taken. they assaulted guards and broke into the castle, but some guards found that the prince they had was fake. is there a punishment? or a reward? the king is pretty strict which is in a players backstory. What should i do?
It will partial depend on the players and what you want to do. The player that revealed the fake prince would logically be forgiven for doing such. Even if the King is strict, what that character did helped The King and Country directly. If there still is punishment, it will be light. The other one they'll have to argue for, the prince may need to reveal himself, or they may need to break him out. The King may require the Party to complete a quest for him as a potentially more linient punishment. He may require that the character that assaulted the guards at the gate be in prison until the quest is complete.
I'm feeling it. The fake prince idea was brilliant, btw. Just great.
Here's what I'm thinking--of course there are people who will want the players dead, fake prince or no. And there will be nobles who will want the fake prince to be the real prince, for their own benefit. (He was doing great things for them, so they are willing to look the other way and claim he is the real prince just to advance their own cause.) So some people want them dead, and others want them alive, and believe them.
What about a prison break? People in the castle risk their own lives to help the players escape, while most of the guards chase them. Powerful people in the palace back the fake prince, claiming that it was all a lie. One of the guards who saw the truth turns up dead. Now the players are on the run, and need to prove the truth. Dun dun dunnnnn :)
