I’ve got an upcoming 3 day game I’m hosting a few months from now. The players will all be a part of the country Illithiil’s “special forces” for lack of a better term. They must go to the country Elegrios and install a new king in secret.
Elegrios is in a state of anarchy at the moment and the current king and Queen are hiding in their fortress hoping to wait out the storm. The players must escort this new proxy king across the ocean and into Elegrios and in secret, forcibly install him as their new king. After, they must escape without being noticed.
That’s not the problem. The problem is what do the players do about the city’s guards/military? Do they just suddenly switch allegiance to this new king? Or do I send a couple thousand soldiers on unmarked ships to come in and take control once the new king is in place?
That’s my first question, my second is what are some blunders they could stumble upon once they get to Elegrios? It’s a dark country with evil people in every corner.
I would say that you should have some other prominent figure in the military (a commander or general) and then maybe have the guards be split on allegiance, with some rallying behind the new king and some staying loyal to the general who does not recognize the new king.
I would make summoning more troops for aid from Illithill as an option for the players, but one that they need to actively make that part of their plan or expect a delay in aid if they send for them after entering the country.
As far as blunders, for a country filled with evil people its possible that the proxy could be kidnapped if they are not careful (if someone deduces that he/she is person of value). You could also have the possibility of them being recognized as foreigners, which could stir up some trouble. Finally, maybe the king and queen have spies among the anarchists who will report to them regarding matters of interest, and maybe one of these spies could act under their command to try and disrupt the party's tactics and goals.

Fantastic! Thank you! Great ideas. I hit that writers block at 100mph.

Thanks, everyone.
