PCs: Merric Goodbarrel: Halfling Ranger (Gloomstalker) 4th. Dual wields shortswords and has the most hit points. Brando can't remember whole name: Forest Gnome Wizard (Diviner) 4th. Has two daggers and 21 hit points. So a hit is around 50% of his hit points.
My plan is that they are to arrive at the ruins of an elven city (because ppl haven't done that before) that has been preyed upon by a wizard's fiends for years. Know abandoned, a few of the fiends remain. A few hell hounds along with some 2 bearded devils. One of the first houses they can enter has one of the strongest enemies there, a shadow demon. Else the 2 grey oozes and the ochre jelly in other locations are all the monsters. Normally to at least 3 but mostly 4 PCs, this is a fine encounter at 4th to 5th level in my opinion. But they are only two. And the last time a creature hit the wizard it did 10 damage. Which at the time was enough to kill him in two strikes. So everytime I make an attack against him I'm shitting an eldritch blast hoping it to be less than 5 dmg. The strongest enemy there is here is a Cambion that is talking to an Imp who wholes a friend of the PC's friend captive. The Chambion is only there to give them the chance of eavesdropping on their conversation. He is a possible encounter they can end up fighting but I don't expect them to.
The Imp is the one they are looking for. For he is the one who holds their friend's friend captive. He also gives of some information on where to go next (yeah. So original xD). He is a buffed Imp. The largest changes are +1 save DC to his sting and he is a 4th lvl wizard. He has some more hit points (like 23 or 30) but my goal is to combo it with him going invisible, and then casting a spell. Leaving one round open for the PCs to act. Then he vanishes. Repeat.
BUT. I am afraid that the two patrols (in different places of course) of a bearded devil and a hell hound. The 3 different oozes. Where two of them are one encounter and the ochre jelly will find it's time to strike. Depending on when that is. If they even enter the room where the ocre jelly is. But I'm afraid that the shadow demon (who I might debuff a bit) is going to be even harder than the Imp, and even dangerously deadly within the first few rounds. I think that is all the monsters that can be encountered there...
So, for 2 level 4 PCs. Is this too hard of an encounter. This is probably going to take place at night (OH AND WILL-O'WISPS TOO. Forgot about those too). So the gloomstalker is going to be MVP. So do you think this may be a bit too rough of an encounter? I think their hardest battle was after going through a dungeon (already having fought 3 or 4 battles) and then going up against 4 animated armors. Just so you have an idea of what they are capable of.
Sorry for the long ramble. Best the loot and luck to you my friend! ^^ And thanks in advance! ^^
