Hey y’all, I’m running a modified version of A Wild Sheep’s Chase with two semi-experienced and two first time players in the upcoming weeks. I was previously a player in a Wild Beyond Witchlight campaign with the two experienced players, and I’ve been considering adding some references to that campaign into the one-shot for them. Basically, the characters of Noke and the wizard would be swapped for Kettlesteam (the Witchlight npc) and an absent player’s PC from the last campaign. The story would remain pretty much the same with minor changes.
I know that the two experienced players would love this, but I’m considering whether this would alienate the new players. The new version of the story would obviously be arranged so that you wouldn’t have to have prior knowledge of these characters to enjoy interacting with them. What would be your advice here? Run the one-shot as normal or keep the Witchlight references while making it accessible for the new players?
If you have reservations about something, you should trust your own advice. You know the people at your table better than any on here might, and you have the ability to judge their potential reactions far better than we do.
That said, I find that easter eggs are always fun, but shouldn't be the focal point of the game. If you include one, its discovery shouldn't be a requirement for the furtherance of the game or the enjoyment of it.
Good luck, have fun!
