Hey, running TftYP and trying my best to connect all of the adventures. I changed the baby dragon in the Sunless Citadel to a black dragon instead of a white one to relate to the 'spawn of Nightscale'. They ended up befriending then releasing the dragon instead of returning her to the kobolds and it flew off, never to be seen again.
Well, they're getting to Nightscale and wondering how I can either bring her to the encounter or even just make a cameo. The problem is that Nightscale is a difficult encounter to begin with. She hides 3/4 covers underwater (upping her AC to 23) and only resurfaces when her acid breathe replenishes. Blasts the party from 30 feet away then submerges. (i want to keep the danger but may make it easier by allowing her to bite the nearest player, putting her in reach then diving back in, at least allowing an OA)
On top of that the original party may be diminished. We started off with 6 players, one comes every other session or so, one started a new job so may not be able to make it any more (I may have this specific session on a different day so he can come because I was planning something with his backstory a few areas prior) so our group of 6 level 5 players (by the time we get there) is now down to any where from three to five players (we'd be lucky if we have all 6) but also the 2 players would maybe be level 4 instead of level 5 like the rest
That being the case, I don't want a double dragon encounter, even a wyrmling and a young dragon. Would decimate the group. I don't know what to do, I want the party and wyrmling to recognize each other, even be friendly(ish) but I also want the battle to happen (and the loot at the end). If the wyrmling explains to Nightscale that they are friends, she may allow them to pass unharmed, but that would deprive us of the boss battle and the loot (it wouldn't make sense for her to give up her loot).
I was thinking of having the baby appear after or towards the end of the battle, crying about the death of Nightscale, but then attacking the group after may be slightly easier but still hard?
What about if the wyrmling arrives mid fight, and explains that they are friendly. Bit of cease fire negotiations, still get loot, still get boss battle even throw in some RP. Both party and Dragon can do some serious damage to each other, before the fighting is stopped.

I sort of want that, but dragons aren't notorious for allowing people to take their loot. Especially since even the description says that the dragon is highly unlikely to leave it's lair or loot and IF it is somehow forced to flee/negotiate it comes back with a vengeance.... I guess I can see how the fight goes, if the party is getting too creamed I can have that happen and the dragon is grateful for saving its spawn and may offer the items (wand of magic missles, +2 great axe, +1 shield, healing & fly potion) but not the money itself? I know the wand, axe (especially if the barb is in the group), and shield would be highly desired. I can ONLY give these out... half loot or such
The second issue is that they were hired to clear out the entire Forge to be used for the dwarves. Technically the Forge itself will be cleared, but the the current users of the mine have an uneasy truce with the dragon (gold for peace). I Guess that treaty can continue but it will affect the quest completion/reward? (on one hand who wants a dragon literally right below them that you need to pay tithe to BUT if you're on friendly terms having dragon fire and occasional cast off scales may also be beneficial to a crafter)....
Well if they could negotiate the truce then get paid by the dwarves, who now have a friendly(ish) dragon that they could placate with gold cast offs. It could be a mutually beneficial thing dragon gets gold and company, dwarves get their forge and protection.
I haven't read the adventure so I have no idea if it would work or not, but it's a possible.

What do you guys suggest?
Really? No one can suggest any balancing or even how to introduce the wyrmling at all??
