I'm running Dragon of Icespire Peak for a group who is almost entirely new to TTRPGs and DnD. There are 7 players which has been a bit of a challenge already, but it's likely that 1-2 won't be able to make it regularly. They are currently level 3.
After completing the Gnomengarde quest, one of the players decided to just carry a gnome NPC home with her. Given the rewards so far and the group not having much in the way of healing capabilities, I was thinking of using this gnome as an Aritificer-Alchemist who could set up shop in Phandenlin and act as a follower to some extent.
I think Artificer makes the most sense thematically, my concern is would the infusions be a little too generous at such low levels? One PC is already a Pact of the Blade Hexlock, so would having three PCs with magic weapons at level 3 for free be a bit too imbalanced or am I overthinking this?
The classes are all pretty balanced. And you can always give the party harder encounters with more or stronger enemies.
And since your Artificer would be a follower, you get to choose the infusions and can pick some nice utility, like a Bag of Holding and Goggles of Night.

Don't worry too much about balance. ;-)
