Inspired by Critical Role, I'm planning on DMing a battle royale-type one-shot. The arena will be no larger than 100 by 100 feet so the players feel more inclined to fight rather than the entire game be spent running around and collecting materials. Keeping that all in mind, do ya'll have any interesting and unique ideas for a dynamic battle arena? Any interesting ideas for why they're fighting in the arena in the first place?
The people running the arena can occasionally set monsters loose into the arena. You can see if the battle participants temporarily untie to remove the threat, or use it as an opportunity to turn on each other.
I just ran a few sessions like this. My players had some downtime, and were interested in doing some pit fighting to pick up some money. Initially I was just going to use the pit fighting downtime rules from Xanathar's, but decided to expand it into actual encounters. Set up an arena map, then had them do a qualifying fight, then a couple big money fights. First one had an anti-magic field around the arena (to make it something different and force them to think outside the box), the final two had a magic dome above the arena floor to limit flying and spells hitting the crowd.
