My players are getting to place where they may be able to acquire green dragon scales and craft it into armor.
What advantages do you think armor made out of green dragon scales would confer? For most dragons I'd say resistance to the type of damage their breath weapon does, but it seems weird that armor would be able to protect one from poison. I know I could always just say "magic" or whatever, but does anyone have a more clever idea?
This isn’t a hypothetical; dragon scale armor already exists, and if made from green dragon scales, it confers resistance to poison damage (which is not the same thing as protection from poison per se; it’s not going to do anything against the Poisoned condition).
An interesting idea which I like but which the game doesn't reflect is adapting dragon scale mail based on the age of the dragon whose scales were used to make it. The scales of a Young Green Dragon shouldn't be equivalent to the scales of an Ancient Green, ne?
The way I see it, if the players are making their own armor rather than finding an existing set of Dragon Scale:
-Young: Armor has no +1. resistance to Poison, advantage on breath weapon saves (but not Frightful Presence, since young dragons don't have it). Can sense the presence of dragons of Young or younger age (Older dragons either go undetected or free or get a save to hide from the armor - possibly alerting them to the presence of a hunter if they succeed). -Adult: Armor is as written, save can sense the presence of Adult or younger dragons. -Ancient: Armor is +2. Once per day, the wearer can choose to succeed instead of fail when they flub a save against a breath weapon or Frightful Presence. Can detect any age of dragon.
I dislike that idea. In the past, the age/size of the armor affects how much you can make from it, not making more/less powerful.
Partly because the general rule is you need to do more than just find the beast, kill it, and hand it to a Wizard with Fabricate to get the armor. Instead the armor must be carefully crafted and then enchanted.
The enchantment is more important than the materials used.
One thing you might want to think about is which check would it be to craft it, are they proficient in crafting armour and what is the DC for crafting it? I would say it would be DC 20. if they are proficient they add proficiency bonus but if not roll straight.

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
