If you're in my campaign, LEAVE. You don't want the fun spoiled. So Jeremy, Alex, Nathan, Drew and Chad, get on. And together please. Everyone knows, you never split the party.
[SPOILERS]
Campaign started as a L5 one shot and has morphed into a 3 way mix of MrFarlands LMoP/Taldorei guide; and the DM Guild Tale of 2 Dragons mashup of LmoP and DoIP.
ok story wise.
We have 6 characters
Dragon born Warlock (Celestial/Pact of the Chain) (parents were Bahamut clerics and were murdered)
Ghostwise Halfling Monk (UA/Astral Self) (became a hermit after his people, including himself, became cannibalistic and has been possessed by a Wendigo. Sought soliude as a monk to control the spirit and seeks to end his curse)
DMG Aasimar Paladin (Devotion) just your standard rank and file Paladin who secretly dreams of being "bad"
Half Orc Blood Hunter (Order of the Lycan) former soldier, became a blood hunter after his unit was decimated by the Herd of Storms, and was rescued and recruited by Tova
Tiefling Cleric (Blood Domain)-father was a cleric of Bahamut, mother was Raven Queen cleric who was murdered when they discovered something in the church.
Wood Elf UA Ranger (Beast Conclave)- belonged to a tribe of elves in the Black Valley that shought to keep the daemons from the Umbra Hills at bay. They were decimated and he is the last member of his tribe.
The first three are all align with the church of Bahamut- THe Warlocks patron is a solar form of a Dragonborn Paladin named Benelux, who also appears to the Monk in Astral form, and the Aasimar's angelic guide.
THeir reasons for being here- someone or something has infiltrated the church of Bahamut, and has been assassinating and silencing up and coming; and experienced members. It is of a daemonic influence. Both sets of parents where investigating this, and were murdered for it. Benelux was- maybe- the first casualty of this, and has been tasked by Bahamut with tracking down, and eliminating this threat. This organization, a secret society within the church, is called the Hidden Light.
The last three, and the Dragonborn warlock, are all tied to the Claret Order, specifically the Order know as the Crimson Shadow. The Blood Cleric and Blood Hunter are explicitly members. The Ranger has aligned with them as a tracker, given his tribes background fighting daemons and fiends. The warlock was mentored by Jorick LaMensch, second on command of the Taldorei branch of the Claret Order and also a Blood Hunter of the Profane Soul (the Warlocky one). The Raven Queen/Claret Orders are concerned because the daemonic activity has also brought undead, and they are pretty specifically against that.
The two organisations realised they had common goals, and each sent representative members to investigate the rising daemonic and undead activity in Jorunn Village (Phandalin).
Note: the Warlock and Blood Hunter are currently captured by the Cragmaw goblins, due to the players having work commitments that will keep them away for a while. RIght now I'm hoping ot have them back when the party rescues Grundren at Cragmaw Castle, but this can be pushed back and have them being held at one of the Giant liar, or even along the Descent path.
So:
LMoP and DoIP run concurrently and scaled up. The party will be following 2 different but intertwined plot threads, and will finish both adventures at about 11th level.
Changes other than the obvious.
Both: lost of monsters get replaced with an equiv CR daemon. (We're sticking with the Abyss here.)
DoIP: The Circle of Thunder is now more into summoning daemons and creating undead. They are now explicitly an offshoot of the Herd of Storms.
THe StoneCold Reavers have been fleshed out into a full fledged rival party, that will harass the players.
THe Orcs that were displaced are now part of the Many Arrows Tribe, which is now an offshoot of the Rivermaw Tribe (Thanks Bob World Builder, also using a LOT of his other suggestions)
The Mountains Toe Gold Mine is partially owned by the Rockseeker bros
The Dragon is likely going to be completely replaced, not sure with what kind tho.
LMoP: All Goblinoids (except Droop and a few others, like The Hobgoblin hunting party ) have been corrupted and tainted by daemon forces. Mostly reskinning.
Glasstaff isnt necessary Iarno. Iarno is actually the resident High Level Mage (actually hes 9th) and is a business partner of Sildar and the Rockseeker Bros.
The Spider is from Ruhn Shak, and is the mastermind behind the StoneCold Reavers and Glasstaff and the Shadewatch (Redbrands). THe drow there have learned of a lost drow city, isolated under the Cliffkeep mountains, and is using the Reavers to influence the Dragon, which displaces everyone else and causes chaos, while trying to discover Wave Echo Cave so they can use it as a waypoint to the lost drow city. He is also, with help from his fellow drow, doing other things to cause chaos in the area, like kidnapping children for their daemonic rituals, allying with forces trying to take down the churchs of Bahamut and the Claret Order, and stirring up the giants in the cliffkeep mountains.
After this Tale of 2 Dragons the party will be 11th level and will get tasked with investigaing the increasing activity from the giants... leading to some GDQ classic-ness. Once they face off with the avatar of Lloth, who is trying to cross the Divine Gate; they should be (I'm guessing here, but I'm using milestone leveling) 14-17th level and will they learn who see is aligned with and who is behind all the corruption of the Church of Bahamut:
Acererak- who has become part of the Ashen Covenant, plans to use the Horns of Orcus to ascend him (Orcus) godhood (Or maybe himself, and he's playing the entire Ashen Covenant/Black Academy as fools).
One of the Horns of Orcus, secured in the Hall of the Exalted, beneath the Platinum Sanctuary, has slowly been corruptting mebers of the clergy to the Ashen Covenant. How is this justice? Why are their still people suffering? Why does Bahamut let this happen? With Orcus's plan, noone will know pain or death or hunger. All will be equal. They have aligned with Lloth because she knows the location of the other Horn. (Which the player will gain when they finish the GDQ arc).
Where I'm needing some ideas, to work in the Acererak/Orcus elements. I'm thinking having the Circle of Thunder be explicitly a cult of Orcus, Thundertree's ash zombies created by them.
For the final story arch, I'm thinking scaling up and reskinning Return to the Tomb of Horrors. the Black Academy and Moil are awesome, and Kalstand can be subbed with Westrunn, and Pitchfield and the Vast Swamp can be replaced with Dryanna or Stilben and the associated swamp.
