So a month or two ago, 2 of my players (husband and wife) left there house on vacation. Me and the rest of the players, being very close friends and having a key to there house did the only logical thing and pranked their house while they were gone! We took a roll of raffle tickets and hid them individually around their whole house (ended up being around 4000+ tickets). We hid them EVERYWHERE... like in every glass in the cabinets, under every napkin and coaster, inside videogame cases. Literally everywhere, they're STILL finding them. To make it fun, right before they got home I sent them an ominous text showing them a single ticket stub saying "Find the match, win a prize" naturally it was ticket number 69420 because we're immature children. To my shock, they actually found the matching ticket! I told them I would give them some kind of starting equipment prize in my next campaign that was starting soon (getting closer now!)
I want to give them some fun homebrew magic item that isn't necessarily powerful or useful in combat (though I'm not against that) but something they would have fun with and is worth the torment of 4000+ tickets in their house lol
You could use common magic items from Xanathar's. They're useful but not game-breaking.

All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
First, this is amazing and you're all monsters. Second, what is some of the context of the campaign? If your were running in Eberron for example, giving something like a Docentwould make sense, but maybe not in a homebrew setting.
Personally I like the idea of an item that is flavor wise engaging and offers a minor benefit, but has the potential to be upgraded or grow over the course of the campaign. The Vestiges of Divergencefor example from Wildemount I think are great because they can be used as rewards for completing side quests or pivotal character moments without having to give an additional item that the player has to balance against what they already have.
2: The theme is kinda like a frontier settlement story. But really high magic (like eberon) but flavored like an Old Western movie. (we really wanted to go with something different this go-around lol)
I like the idea of the vestiges (especially the fact that they level with you), but all of my players looooove to read the dnd source books so they all know what the vestiges are and what they do and i wanna keep the mystery of a homebrew campaign lol
What if you make it some sort of a magic raffle ticket in game, kind of like the Willy Wonka golden tickets that let you into the Chocolate Factory?
Maybe at the start of the campaign there is some castle and only people with a golden ticket and their friends can enter, and the husband/wife PCs have the golden ticket?

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

Interesting, so they're on the frontier / outskirts of a high magic society? If they're exploring ruins maybe you can give them some sort of uncommon magic item but give it sentience. Could be fun RP wise, but overtime it provides more benefits as the PC interacts with it more. Then you could do something like turns out its actually part of a power source for an advanced magical system and contains a fiend or some other powerful extraplanar entity.

That is an AMAZING idea lol
They're still finding tickets around their house and getting frustrated that they haven't found them all (not real frustrated, but in good fun lol). They KNOW they're getting a prize in-game but I can only imagine the face-palm when they realize their prize is ANOTHER GODDAMN TICKET (I can hear it now lol)

Its more like: Events from the current campaign are going to cause the world to have a sudden increase in magic. ~150 or so years after the current campaign, a new continent was discovered to the far southwest. As far as scientists in world know, this continent is newly formed but practically bursting with Manakyte (physical, crystalized magic gems found throughout the world). Thus the mass exodus to "The Frontier" began, some people for research, some for money, and others for exploration and adventure.
The party is going to be a ragtag group asked by an eccentric old man to become new settlers to his own privately funded settlement and the campaign is going to be mostly a sandbox of them exploring the new continent, improving/defending their town, and unraveling their own personal mysteries.
Since the continent is new, there are no ruins or ancient civilizations. But there are other settlements and some ghost towns of failed settlements. (the party will be a NEW town, not the FIRST town). There are corporations and government funded "cities" and factories, railroad tycoons, a large scale mining operation etc...
I like the idea of a sentient common magic item! maybe something like a prototype from one of the corporations? I'm imagining something like the Ghosts from Destiny

Very cool. I love the concept and I think that every eccentric old man needs a Veteran Cane. Just in case.
Chilling kinda vibe.
