I will be starting a new campaign heavily drawing inspiration from Naomi Novik's novel "Uprooted." The players will be deliving into a corrupted, sentient, and evil forest that has swallowed the entire western continent. In search of lost knowledge, magic, and treasure, retreating to the only standing town left on the entire continent tailored to accommodating those who wish to uncover the forest secrets.
I wish to implement the corruption from the novel. In which people who spend time in the wood or come in contact with it's corrupted and misshaped denizens. Slowly become corrupted themselves. Which could result in.... This is where I need help. I do know that if the corruption level reaches to high, there character will be lost to the wood and will have to roll a new character. And I do know there will be ways to combat corruption, and to lower your corruption level, one example is the burning of rosemary to ward off the corruption.
Any ideas on a corruption mechanic that doesn't snowball to heavily? I do want the players to feel the pressure growing corruption presents. But I don't want it to be a "lose more" scenario.
I would start with Matt Mercer's corruption rules for 5e, which are themselves adapted from Heroes of Horror Taint rules (lol taint) and just adjust them as needed to suit your own needs.
Just took a look, definitely a good starting point. But I do want some corruption to be garented. No saving against spending time in the wood. Would definitely need larger thresholds.
Hey OP! Just wondering how this went for you... looking to add a small arc into my current campaign, based on the wood in Uprooted as well. (Glad I'm not the only one who was inspired to use the forest from that book as a villain... such a great book!) If you ended up going this route, what mechanic did you use? How did it go?
