One of my players has asked if he could play a warforged artificer in my Homebrew Campaign. At first I was hesitant, unsure how I would work it into the background of my world, then I decided to allow it but told him that for him there is no history, he was found, buried deep in the mountains by dwarfs. The old school, I will have a think about it and write it out later when I have thought and then turn it into part of the campaign for you.
So I have had a think and have the following, wondering how it looks, if it makes sense and how it might be improved upon.
created by a githzerai who, frustrated by his people’s lack of martial ability when fighting the remnants of the illithid and more importantly the Githyanki, felt the need to try to create soldiers who could be as vicious as the forces they where fighting without breaking the tenants of Zerthimon. But, he miscalculated and the creatures he created had sentience, had souls and so had freedom. When his mistake was discovered the Githzerai, instead of banishing him and his constructs, instructed him to teach them the ways of the Githzerai to allow them freedom of choice, that was to be his pennance.
As a race they where paticularily able to survive the ravishes of the environment of Limbo, the sound and chaos not impacting the ability to rest, able to ignore it. My players Warforged was part of a raiding party attacking a small Ilithid Nest deep under the mountains when the ambush happened. Fighting alongside the dwarfs who had found the nest at the same time he fought a holding action alongside the gilth and warforged that had formed the raiding party. It was during this battle that the tunnel was brought down, a last ditch attempt to save the attacking party to allow them to retreat and regroup. He was caught in the rockfall alongside a Gith. Realising he was dying and the warforged would be trapped here possibly eternally the Gith used the last of his energy to place the construct in a form of stasis. Setting wards that would wake him should another being uncover him. However part of this ritual and the affect it had on its mind resulted in the amnesia he has now. That was centuries ago, and while the fight alongside the dwarfs was brief it fed into their stories, the silent warriors and their seemingly mechanical allies who helped destroy a mindflayer holdout. By the time you where found any dwarf that was alive at the time was most likely dead, but the story remained. You where revived and accepted as an equal by the dwarfs.
I need to work out the magic that formed the stasis and wiped the PC's mind. But how does that sound as an alternative to Warforged origin?
Well, if the DM allows it and it's reasonable why not? As far as I can tell this player isn't using thier backstory to get powerful items and things like that.

Just to clarify as the DM I have placed the Warforged into this position in my world, this isn't from the player. I am just trying to clarify if it makes sense from a Gith and Warforged lore perspective. I like it but maybe a weakness of mine is I like to try and ground my world and campaign in the lore of DnD. I have never run or played in an Eberon campaign, or a campaign with a warforged in it. I also have not run a Gith campaign in a long time, like 15 years lol and this feels like a backstory that could allow me to bring the Gith into the campaign later on down the line (they have the small matter of an aboleth to beat during the progression from 1-6). I am considering giving the character advantage against spells or effects that charm, dominate, read minds etc. To represent the training and shielding that being created by the gith has given. But my main thing here is ways that this background might be improved upon to fit in even better with Gith or Warforged lore.
I think this is a great background to give the character. Personally I only worry about the lore if I'm playing in an offical setting, I don't really think of their being a way to 'defy' the lore of D&D if you are playing in any sort of home brew setting. That's one of the strengths of D&D you can make the world what it needs to be. Most importantly, if it's giving you ideas for plot hooks to create fun adventures for the players, that's a big plus.

Piggy-backing off of this; if you want to keep things open and simple, warforged don't need a "lore" reason to exist if you feel like you're forcing it.
A single warforged could always have been created by an reclusive (possibly mad) Mage/scientist type for their own experiments before dying in a lab accident and leaving their creation free to wander the world looking for new purpose.
Again though, your lore is as good as anyone's, especially if you're looking to tie it into the campaign background.

Anything works, there's really no wrong answer
