Hi I started playing/Dming for the first time with some friends using the Lost mines of phandelver module. There have been a few fights and exploration as everyone is getting used to the game but they were confused about not getting any xp for the things they did. Since they didnt do the milestone. So I'm decidiing to give them xp as it comes but I wanted to know if there were any specifics about changing from the milestone values
The milestones tell you what level the adventure is expecting you to be at any particular point; giving experience instead of using the milestones may cause the PCs to be over or under level (I don't know LMoP specifically, but from other modules, you need to really run around grinding xp to keep up with what milestones recommend).
That adventure is specifically designed to teach you both milestone and monster-based XP. In the first part it is milestone. In the later parts it is monster based.
If they didn't get XP because they didn't do any of the milestones, well, that should teach them something about playing D&D: be thorough; leave no stone unturned; and when the DM hints that there's something of interest somewhere, ignore it at your own risk (to XP). If you want the XP, you've gotta do the things the DM set up for you to do.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

I will try to keep them on task to hit the milestones then. Thanks
