Maybe it's cuz it's Christmas (ok, it's definitely cuz it's Christmas) but I definitely want to have the city of Waterdeep sing the praises and shower accolades upon my PC group at our next game on Monday.
They successfully returned the embezzled wealth to the city (with only the barest hints that they wouldn't turn down a "finder's fee") and pulled in so many other folks in the process that it's definitely not going to be a big secret.
My question is, then, what seems reasonable to you? Real estate? Noble titles? A parade? Key to the city? Star Wars: A New Hope style medal ceremony (but with the Wookie getting one this time!)? Maybe just lots of broadsheet fame and a more subtle system of favors owed or bestowed by the Lords themselves?
I’ve not played or even read the adventure, but here goes. It’s going to depend, a lot, on how much the powers that be in the city like them. If they don’t much like the party, but can’t deny their heroics, then something like a parade is great. It’s relatively cheap, lets the commoners have their heroes, and once it’s done, that’s it. And I’d just keep applying those sorts of considerations. Giving them titles means they’ll become more permanent residents, and possibly a part of the power structure. So the city would only do that if they really love the PCs. Giving them some land is kind of in between. It keeps them local, which might be good considering they just proved how useful they are, but can still keep them at arms length from gaining any real power in the city. It could even be some land outside the city walls, if they’re worried the party might upset things as they are. Or, to go the other direction, if you have some nobles who really don’t like them, they could start false rumors about the party to undermine the goodwill, while instead building up others in that noble’s faction. To the point that the party is treated with disdain when they arrive in town.
I'm trying to imagine someone making a big deal about embezzled money going back into the coffers of the city. I have a hard time believing that the average person would care, although they'd be amazed if they saw the actual pile of gold. I think I'd probably just have Silverhand come over all Leslie Knope-ish and show them all the social programs that money funds, so they see they've done something heroic, and she should make it clear that even if it seems like they're under appreciated, she knows that they're people of worth (I've run this and it never occurred to me for a second that my players would give the money back) and she's going to be looking out for them in the future.
I mean, a key to the city ceremony and a parade and medals sounds like a kick ass end to a campaign, so go with that even for no reason at all. But what else should they get? Maybe Silverhand as a group patron?

I'm wide open to interesting suggestions!
