So, I'm going to be running a homebrew campaign inspired by Descent into Avernus soon, taking over from my current DM, and I'll be sending them to Avernus at about level 5 or 6 (currently at about 3).
Basically, the party consists of an aasimar crown paladin of noble descent, a tiefling wild magic sorceress, a half-elven monk, a human arcane archer and the DM will likely become an air genasi warlock of the genie, being a prince from the elemental plane of air.
The current DM has kind of built up the aasimar paladin (his girlfriend) as the unofficial protagonist of the campaign. He has freely admitted this to me, and that's perfectly okay! So far none of us has felt left out or in the shadow of her, despite the narrative being forged largely around her background. My narrative will continue with that trend, with her city being pulled into Avernus, Zariel and other devils showing up to try and corrupt her into an oathbreaker with a Darth Vader style fall from grace (something she's been begging for since the beginning of the campaign).
The others, however, I have no idea what to do with. I know nothing about their history, though I hope that will change before I take over, but I'm looking for some advice and ideas. Can people help me forge small arcs for them please? :) Here's what I've got.
I thought perhaps the tiefling wild magic sorcerer will discover more about her heritage this adventure. Maybe Glasya could contact her "great-great granddaughter" and try to conspire with her to userp Zariel to put Bel or another devil on the throne? Or maybe her wild magic sorcery comes from a mixture of fey and devil blood? I'd say potentially even demon blood could cause her chaotic magic, but seeing how much opposition there is to demons in the Avernus storyline I doubt I could make that work without causing tension with the other PC's.
The arcane archer has no backstory. She's brand new to D&D and hasn't really got any interest in coming up with a backstory despite seeming to enjoy her interactions with NPC's often. With little to work with, how can I give her a mini arc or something of interest to hook her in? She's quite firey in personality, but also kinda wise when it comes to sensing danger OOC.
The half-elven monk may have a backstory, though I haven't been told it yet, which is convenient. I feel like a half-elven monk is a little out of place, but I'm willing to find some small character arc to work with if possible. He's a bit of a misfit and has tagged along with the tiefling sorceress for the longest time.
The air genasi genie pact warlock sounds like a really interesting concept, though I admit I initially thought it highly out of place for a Hell themed adventure. He descends from nobility from the elemental plane of air, and his evil older brother was the secret BBEG of our current arc of the campaign, raising a rebellion throughout the kingdom. I'm not quite sure what to do with him here however, but I can imagine him being quite an exotic target for devils.
Any advice? I know it's probably hard to tell without knowing the players or the characters, but a second opinion and some ideas tossed around would be great!
Thanks in advance!
