I'm wanting to make a progressing series of combat based tests of my players Abilities, anyone got any suggestions of existing monsters that would be of particular challenge to strength or dexterity, any special abilities that require saves using those abilities? Any particular homebrew ideas? They're 4 level 8 players but I like the idea of loads of low cr monsters hampering the fight with one higher Cr challenge. Like boggles for example
There are a bunch of beasts that have knock prone abilities with strength saves (e.g. Dire Wolf). For non-beast monsters that can be used against level 8 PCs without unreasonably large numbers, an Ankheg swarm involves both Strength and Dexterity saves, a Bulette has strength saves, and lots of creatures have dexterity saves vs damage.
the arena has an enchanted sand theme so i've gone with a clay gladiator and a homebrewed sand elemental for strength. for dex i decided on a whole load of boggles using their Dimensional Rift ability to pass the key to the next room between them, then a few Gith monks, just to kind of follow the dex theme to keep the players from just straight up slaughtering the boggles occupied

Anything that grapples should be good.
