i love running 3 dimensional combat, with flying/burrowing/swimming enemies but i lack a good way to do it on a 2d battlemap, does anyone have good tips that look good on the table that isn't like buy 30 plastic things for $40 each?
I'll often use dice (typically a d100) next to a mini to represent its elevation in feet, maybe with something placed underneath to provide a visible indicator of height as well.
You can also make 'height dials' where you write numbers around the edge of one circle of card, and pin a second circle over the top with a cut-out to show the number. You can then dial the height up and down.
A third method that's a little more expensive is to buy some plastic bases and affix magnets underneath (make sure they all line up). You can then paint them different colours and use them to represent 5 ft elevations. Because they're magnetised, they'll stack securely, and you can place them under a mini.
I'm planning on running a big battle that'll feature some hefty 3d combat on a complex, multi-level battlemap, so I've been looking into solutions myself. I'm right now looking at modifying something like these, gluing in magnetised bases to the 'claws' and using them to support miniatures. Although the armatures aren't that long (4 ish inches), I figure I can maybe find bigger ones.

that is actually the best suggestion i've gotten so far, i'll have to try it but that really seems like it would work
I have a load of lego so am able to replicate the plastic towers for no extra cost, another option is to use up turned glasses or cups with an indicator showing the exact height. Alternatively those plastic stands that come in pizza boxes to hold up the middle of the box if you turn them upside down they make a great stand for a mini.
