I use Fantasy grounds. I actually just recently bought it. About a week and a half ago now. I tried roll20 but just did not like it. Also I was looking for something that I could outright buy and not have a monthly sub to. I also wanted something that would not require my players to have to purchase the software as well. For me it was worth the $150 for the ultimate edition considering how much it will get used and Sub price vs. full purchase will cost me less in the long run. There were other programs I was looking at but Fantasy Grounds just had so many tools on hand.
https://foundryvtt.com/ is fantastic, pay once for the GM then free for players, great support for mods etc.
I was checking out foundry. Seems like a well thought out program. From what I can tell though there are a lot of people who are having issues related to connecting to the host. Im sure they will fix this over time.
I've been using a mix of battle maps and theatre of the mind on Roll20 with a lot of success.Roll20 is still a little clunky but it works for a free tool.

If you run it locally then it's just port forwarding, but you can also run it on a cloud server like in AWS, or there are hosting services so you don't have to worry about that like https://forge-vtt.com/
As a VTT I absolutely love it, I'm our group's DM for 5e, plus it's so easily extensible (if you know some JavaScript and CSS) that I wrote a simple system for another homebrew system we run, it's great.
I've been using Roll20 for my online sessions (about 4 sessions now). After a bit of a learning curve, it's been going quite smoothly. I was able to upload my custom maps and reveal them bit by bit to the players as they explore. Pretty cool! FYI, I have the free version.

Yeah, the Fog of War is a nice little tool to use on maps. Though I did run into situations with my players were one 1/4 of the maps was not explored and in meta, they were going there much be something on that side we need to check out, but how to get over there. I had to remind them of the good old "And how would your players know any of this?"

I would love it if DDB incorporate a VTT. My life would be SO much easier.
