What do you all think about this as a new Subclass? I am honest at first I was think of it being a Soc subclass but think it would work better as a Wiz subclass.
Wizard Sub Class Cantrip Master
Level 3: Potent Cantrip
Your damaging cantrips affect even creatures that avoid the brunt of the effect. When you cast a cantrip at a creature and you miss with the attack roll or the target succeeds on a saving throw against the cantrip, the target takes half the cantrip’s damage (if any) but suffers no additional effect from the cantrip.
Level 3: Cantrip for ever need
You add all the cleric and druid Cantrips to the wizard Cantrip list that can be sub out on a long rest. You also add 3 more cantrips you can cast. (6 total at level 3, 7 at 4, 8 at 5.)
Level 6: Empowered Cantrip
Whenever you cast a Cantrip spell, you can add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of that spell.
Level 10: Fast Cantrip
When you cast a leveled spell you can cast a Cantrip as a bonus action.
Level 14: Punch Thru
Your Cantrips are harder to ignore. Creatures that are normally resistance to the Cantrips take full damage and creatures that are normally Immune are only resistance.
What is the point of having spellslots? The progression of a Wizard is defined by being able to cast more and more powerful spells as their spellslots increase.
Either you would have to make cantrips as potent as full levelled spells which would break the game, or you'll still have the character mostly not using cantrips at higher levels. IMO this should be a subclass for Artificer since they are a half-caster that has substantial emphasis on casting, or a Warlock.
I do not see this as a Artificer class at all as they are all about crafting not really spells. As for a warlock I do think something like this may work but like with the Soc how do you link it. For a Wiz there subclass is all about what they study with magic so I could see one that focues on the fundamentals. The Soc it is thier blood and lineage, For Locs it is who they made a pack with. Can you think of some "Thing" they made a pack with that focues on the fundamentals?
As a sublass this sounds a bit underwhelming. This feels more like a feat. By trying not to overlap with existing feats too much, the feat could be something like:
Pick 3 cantrips from any list. Choose a modifier (int, wis, cha). Your spellcasting modifier is that stat.
Potent cantrip
Empowered cantrip
Then maybe your Fast Cantrip and Punch Thru could be another feat with a level/spellcasting prerequisite with potentially an ASI or one other trait included. And now I'm thinking in 5e tules. 5.5e added ASI to all feats that are level 4+.
