Alyna clutched a strange ... ornament? - bizarre thing she was keeping on her belt a small willow hoop, with several hag stones and feathers dangling from it with an agate bead in the middle woven into a net. "I think that was the bird," whispered she to Shayne and added a bit later "I can sometimes understand what birds ... communicate, but I think this one just speaks human language."
The monster fowl eyes the ornament, tilting its head to stare sideways with one eye, then shifting to stare with the other.
''Gleee-tors! Gleee-tors!"
It makes a pecking motion, as if to snatch the hoop hung with feathers and stones.
The smaller birds in the trees leap into air, swooping low over your heads and cawing harshly. They nearly strike Eric and Shayne.
((No. But something could be hidden by the brambles and the rocks. If the birds were really fighting over something on the ground, it would probably be beyond the rocky shoulder at the rear of the clearing where the ground dips. Something does smell of spoiled meat. You would have to get closer to see...))
"No! Get off of me!" The willow hoop Alyna made herself (after the fairies taught her how to do it) but it was not magic or anything, not by itself. Just helped to collect the thoughts and she was about to start concentrating on crows cawing to understand why they are so agitated. "Not Gleee-tors!" (she tried to imitate the sound) "My. Bad birds! Shoo!"The fairies said anything can work, even a twig, but Alyna put too much work in the charm to just let random crows to snatch it off.
The party is not taken by surprise, as the birds have been behaving in a strange and somewhat menacing manner.
I can add a map, but the birds are in flight and may shift positions pretty rapidly. You all have plenty of room to move around in the clearing or between the bigger trees outside and around it, but there's not much overhead cover that could keep off flying attackers unless a PC decides to crawl under a bramble--ouch.
The Unkindness is a swarm, in game terms, and can occupy the same 'square' as its target(Alyna, for now).
Everyone starts this combat within melee distance or near enough to close with a move action and still attack on his turn.
Questions?
If not, initiative rolls, please. You can declare actions and make relevant rolls now, if you like, but everything will happen in initiative order.
"No worry, Alyna, they ain't nothing but birds. You got this!" Shayne says, giving her a sense of inspiration... ((As a bonus action, a creature (other than yourself) within 60 ft. that can hear you gains an inspiration die (1d6). For 10 minutes, the creature can add it to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. This can be added after seeing the roll, but before knowing the outcome.))
As he is saying that, Shayne draws his rapier and lunges out at Gorcrow!
The anger at the stupid birds pushed away surprise - who do they think they are! She waved her dagger now, shoo-ing the swarm away ( Attack: 14 Damage: 7 )but then silvery mist covered her for just a moment and Alyna appeared 30ft away from the birds Misty Step (from the feat)
Alyna slashes with her dagger as the ravens wheel round her in a shrieking storm of black feathers and sharp beaks. Suddenly, she melts away like mist, leaving the birds attacking empty air.
The huge raven flies under an arrow shot from Eric's bow, and and without slowing rakes Shayne across the face with its nasty big clawed feet. The barroom bard collapses to the ground with a stifled groan.
The cat in the sack screeches wildly.
...
Alyna reappears across the clearing, away from the fighting but not too far to maybe help her companions. She has a clear view of the birds attacking.
At first, she can't see Shayne--then she spots him sprawled on the ground.
((ouch! And I guess I assume Fammy the familiar would end when the summoner did? Spell doesn’t really cover that but doesn’t make much sense for it to remain...))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
((There is no rule, afaik, but Shayne is not dead yet, just unconscious))
The birds proved to be vicious but as much as Alyna wanted to stay away from them, she could not leave the others. She run back - it seemed head-on fight in close quarters was unavoidable after all.
With the unkindness swarming Eric, he shoots his bow at disadvantage but can attack normally hand-to-hand. If you decide to switch weapons, he certainly has time to drop the bow and whip out his sword or axe before the birds surround him.

Shayne joins in the waving of arms and the "Shoo! Shoo!" ing of any birds that get too close or too pesky.
"Can you actually speak, or do you just mimic random words?" Shayne asks harshly, turning his head at the big bird.
Shayne's rude question gets an immediate answer.
''Kaw--kaw--kill!"
The birds attack, the big one going after Shayne and the flock swarming Alyna.
