(I really wanted to save this as an escape tool, but if it saves us having to search for another entrance from above...)
"Oh. Excuse me. I can fix this I think." Sylnora says, squeezing, going over, or crawling under legs, whatever she has to do to get past to the front. "I was thinking about this last night, how nice it would be to meld stone while we're searching an underground tunnel." She takes a piece of clay from one of her component pouches, and begins to mold it into a sort of open door frame. "Guess our adversaries had the same idea." Once she's done, she places it against the stone blocking their path and casts Stone Shape to attempt making a passageway.
The stone before Sylnora ripples outward like water, parting to reveal the passageway you had used the previous night. The larger tunnel now stands before you, and this time you turn right, eager to make it towards the center.
For the second time this day, you are surprised again as after barely five minutes of walking you see in front of you another intersection with a curved tunnel, with no way straight forward. Based on the projections of Silthras' map, you should have been walking straight for at least another 20 minutes to make it to the center.
'I'm the odd one out here, best let them do their thing.' Loghain thinks to himself as the creep through the tunnels underground. He is content to let the others take the lead. He walks with saber in hand and shield at the ready. As they come up to an crossing, he slows down, listening carefully for sounds of other things lurking in the dark.
As Syl does her acrobatics and magic, Silthras whispers to Loghain; "Used to be an opening here. Also...we encountered strange undead with very good eyesight last time...but Syl and Velyra managed to deal with them fairly quickly." When the tunnel is open again he says, "We have not gone this direction before...so be alert."
Silthras will take a position near the front, keeping an eyes out...but letting Usul lead.
About 40 feet before reaching the intersection, both men would hear the soft scraping of stone on stone echoing faintly in the tunnel. The sound seems to be sourcing from the tunnel leading to the right. It sounds somewhat distant for now, but is definitely getting closer as they listen for a few more seconds.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Hmmm. Best laid plans." Wheels within wheels perhaps?
Silthras is moving forward to investigate more closely when he hears the sounds and signals everyone to stop so that he can listen more closely as he moves up to the intersection as quietly as he can.
Stealth: 21 Perception: 20 (watching and listening, just peeking around the corner) (passive 18)
@DM: is the tunnel curvature, when he peeks, consistent with wheels within wheels?
Stealthily moving forward, Silthras takes a quick peak around the corner. Roughly 100 feet out, he sees the same large stone creature the party encountered the previous night - now flanked by four of the shambling undead that were also with it. As before, they are covered in a thick blood red substance.
Not quite, it's curving the opposite way now. I think I can just show you this.
As a note, buildings are not to scale in this map.
Silthras moves back hastily and quietly, and signals everyone to move further back down the corridor the way they came.
"A hundred feet out, probably less now. Same creatures...let's see if they pass." He ushers everyone back so that the intersection is no longer visible to him, then tries to get everyone to moves back even further.
Wordlessly, Loghain moves back as the man indicates. When they settle in at a safe distance, he sheaths his sword and slings his shield across his back. He instead goes for the longbow he carries, pulling an arrow out and setting it on the string.
The party shuffles backwards, waiting while Silthras peers into the darkness farther than anyone else. You hear steps get louder...and louder...and louder...Then quieter. They begin to fade, receding down the opposite tunnel now.
Silthras breathes a sigh of relief as the sounds diminish. "Shall we follow them? They are moving in the direction we need to go, I think. Or...young Usul could take the broom and travel invisibly, but we have a way to go and I think we might be playing cat and mouse with more of these roaming bands, so probably best to stay together."
If they move forward as a group, whichever way they go, Silthras does his best to measure the distance traveled and the curvature, making inventive use of illusions...
"It seems the layout isn't quite what we expected, there may not even be a center to reach." Kal says, scratching the back of his head. "Maybe you're right though. We can try following them. And if you're confident in you're ability to map this place out, maybe they lead us to the temple."
Silthras raises an eyebrow, "Confident? No. But if we can get a better feel for the layout...maybe.
He glances back the way they came, clearly reluctant to just give up. "We've got three choices: stay together and explore, ask Usul to explore by himself, or perhaps me, or...wait until tomorrow, which may be a dead end. The hub was a means to an end: If it exists we should try to go there, otherwise, seek out the temple."
"I'm partial to Silthras initial suggestion. We should follow that group. If worse comes to worst and we get pincered, we at least know how easy they are to blow up." Velyra says quietly. "I don't think splitting up is a good idea down here. Those might not be the only types of creatures lurking about."
"Then let's do it."Sylnora says, more than eager to find what they came here for. The sooner they reached their final destination, the sooner they were out of here.
Silthras conjures a mage hand, sending it forward, hoping for another illusion, but expecting a wall.
The mage hand smacks into rock as it hits the wall. No illusion is revealed.
