I came up with a character concept I haven't seen used by players in D&D as of yet. The idea came from a waifu warship collector game when my fleet of light cruisers and destroyers were getting ganked by battleships. My attacks weren't leaving a dent in their armor...and then it came to me.
1st level Variant Human Fighter (Heavy Armor Master), Str 15, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 10, starting equipment w/ a hand crossbow, a rapier, a light crossbow and bolts and a dungeoneer's pack, archery fighting style. I plan to go Champion, and I want Crossbow Expert by 4th level, then Sharpshooter later. I eventually want to max Dex and Con, but I don't know if I should forgo Resilient (Wisdom) to do it.
The idea is to be like a walking sentry gun, shooting down baddies while shrugging of whatever they throw back; being this obstacle my party can kite enemies to and hide behind.
How do I do this better? Is there a better class(es) for this? Should I multiclass? Any other feats I should consider?
I would strongly consider battlemaster. Champion gets bursty damage, but that's it. Many of the best battlemaster maneuvers work from range, so you can add a much more interesting controller dimension to your play.
The other concern is feats vs. ASI's. Every class is more effective with its primary stat at 20. You can get there with extra fighter feats, but it may take a bit longer.
I have not played this, but an obvious MC is rogue. Assassin 4 looks good. It adds a sniper-ish feel to the build without losing too much fighter. The movement perks from rogue are great on a ranged build.
Thanks for the reply! I have a buddy who runs rogues, and I know for a fact he likes using his cunning actions every, single, turn. I'll give it a look, but I fear it will compete with the Crossbow Expert bonus attack. Another rogue archetype I saw and liked was the Scout for the movement reaction.
ASI's to get Dex to 20 isn't an issue; I plan to max Dex by 12th level. If I forgo an ASI to grab Resilient (Wisdom), it compensates for a major weakness at the cost of a minor amount of HP and a point in Con saves. What I was concerned about is the -1 to regen from Champ 18. Thinking about it seriously, though, I don't know how likely this character will even get to that point.
Lots of my friends love BM, but in the games I've played, they blow through all of their dice in 1 or 2 rounds, then whine when the DM won't let them take a short rest due to in-game time constraints and/or random encounters.
