I’m playing a lvl 4 Dragonborn EK currently in a party consisting of a shifter Path of Ancients Barbarian, College of Whispers Drow Bard and either a drunken brawler monk or a sorcerer (don’t remember which specialisation) depending which of them DM’s. Being quite a dps as polearm Fighter i want to help my party a bit more through my limited spell possibilities but stuff like Blade Ward and Shield are only self. Our bard barely heals or uses bardic inspiration for us, but mostly for her mediocre dmg so I was hoping if you guys had some ideas for support spells that help her ppl take less damage/help on saving throws. I’ve already got protection from good and evil ready :)
Best “defender” sub-class for Fighter is Cavalier. Even Battlemaster can be more party-friendly through some good maneuvers.
But if you are really attached to EK, you can try to use some classic cantrips like Minor Illusion or Mold Earth to create cover for you allies, although you will use your action for this and your main job as a Fighter is punch enemies. You can also try to leverage things like Create Bonfire, positioning in front of your allies in a small corridor (situational but effective) or even Frostbite, which provides poor damage and a not só good CON save, but the rider effect is good for protection.
Booming Blade, at least through levels 3-4 when you don’t have extra attack yet (and later through 7-10 when you get War Magic), is a great way to prevent melee enemies run away to chase your squishy allies.
Another resourceless way to help allies is the Find Familiar spell. It’s not usually a great pick for EKs, but it’s good.
Unfortunately you don’t have a lot of spell slots to spend and you don’t have effective ways to recharge your spells like dedicated casters (Arcane Recovery, Metamagic, Warlocks, etc), so I advise you to save some of them to your own protection (stay alive and give pressure to enemies is a form of tank) and perhaps cast AoE spells that offers some sort of battlefield control like Thunderwave. You can cast Mage Armor in allies as well. But once again, you don’t have so many spell slots so be careful.
