Hey everyone! So my buddy and I are going to be trying something perhaps a bit crazy. His son is 10 years old and really wants to DM, so we're going to let him DM through the Tales of the Yawning Portal book while his father and I play the characters.
Since our young DM is going to stick strictly to the book (and gladly so), what do you think is the best two person party for us to start off with Sunless Citadel? Playing more than one character isn't an option, we want to try it as a duo. We understand that puts us at disadvantage, particularly at level 1, but splitting the XP between only two means we should level quite fast and those extra levels might make up the power level difference from lack of bodies.
My buddy was thinking paladin, perhaps multiclassing to a warlock. I think he might do that whole sentinel GW area denial thing. I was thinking either cleric/wizard (basically half and half), Battlemaster(3)/Clerix(X), or just a straight cleric (probably either forge, light, or war).
I honestly don't know what to think about multiclassing unless it gives an obvious benefit like the paladin and warlock granting more spell slots for more divine smites. What do you guys think about the options I'm thinking about for my character? I'm pretty sure I want cleric to be part of it, so the question is how to multiclass, if to multiclass at all. Right now I'm planning on the BM3/ClericX idea, but what do you think about the others? I remember Aerie from BG2 as a multi cleric/wizard and she was awesome, but that was a very different game mechanically speaking.
I haven't played the 5E version of Sunless Citadel, but "strictly by the book" might mean healing options in the form of potions might be difficult to come by. With a paladin and a cleric that shouldn't be a problem, but it's something to keep in mind. You're probably going to want to have some meat on your bones as well as decent AC, which also shouldn't be an issue with these class choices. Decent Wis/Perception is always useful, but so is Int/Investigation and if lady Luck doesn't let you down too much a couple of the knowledge type proficiencies could give you an edge as well - Nature in particular, if memory serves. You can easily pick those up through your backgrounds though, so that doesn't restrict your class choices at all.
Cleric/Wizard multiclassing especially half and half) isn't very effective. You don't lose out on slots, but you do lose out on spell levels - and that really hurts. For an arcane/divine mix I'd try Divine Sorcerer or possibly Arcane Cleric instead of multiclassing. It's your character though, you do you.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
I would suggest one of you take a background with thief tool proficiency (don't know how many trap/locked doors there are but never hurts to have the tools)
We’ll make sure we have locks/traps covered one way or the other.
do you guys think a pure cleric can hold his own if there’s only 2 total people? Assume the other guy is either an arcane knight or a paladin sorcerer.
how do you feel about 3 levels of battlemaster then fill out cleric?
Good to know. I’ve never played a cleric before, at least done for any real length of time. Do you think 3 levels of battlemaster to start him off would dilute him too much as a cleric? I like the utility of the maneuver dice to help control the battlefield a bit (since there’s only two of us) and action surge and fighting style could come in pretty handy, no?

Clerics are badasses. Pick one of the more martial domains if you want to slather it on more thickly (War, Twilight, Forge, etc).
