So I've been browsing the forums for a little bit and haven't quite found the answer to my question, so I figured I'd ask here.
I've recently been messing around with the homebrew editor for the last few days, only somewhat successfully beginning to understand how it works. I wanted to experiment with a few new race ideas and mechanics I had for upcoming content I wanted to create, but I wasn't able to understand how to incorporate Natural Armor into new races. Specifically, I wanted to set my AC equal to 10 + Dex + Proficiency bonus, up to a maximum of 20 AC from this. Getting into a new race editor, I created a trait for the natural Natural Armor bonus, set the feature type to "Granted," and added what I figured would be the modifier. In the editor, I did not find an option for "Natural Armor," so I found my alternative: Unarmored Armor Class.
Originally, I set the parameters to: Modifier Type (Set) --> Modifier Subtype (Unarmored Armor Class). I did not select an option for the ability score, because I figured Dexterity was the arbitrary default. Then, under 'Additional Bonus Types,' I selected Proficiency Bonus.
I purposely didn't set the arbitrary 20 AC cap quite yet, simply wanting to see if my idea worked. Unfortunately it did not. When I created my test character, I made sure his proficiency bonus was +2 (level 1 character) with a dex of 12 (+1 dex modifier). However, the character's AC was 14. It should be 13. I found out that instead of doing the calculation of (10 + Dex + Proficiency Bonus), it was calculating my stats as [(10) + (Dex) + (Dex + Proficiency Bonus)], which was essentially doubling the bonus I wanted from Dex. This is obviously incorrect.
I added a second modifier to this trait, in hopes of removing the additional Dex Calculation: Modifier Type (Ignore) --> Modifier Subtype (Unarmored AC Dex Bonus)
I was hoping that I would be able to fix this random miscalculation by making DnD beyond I wanted this: [(10) + (Dex) + (Dex + Proficiency)]. Unfortunately I was wrong again. It flat out ignored all Dexterity modifiers on the character. And after many modifications and tweaks, I haven't been able to find a solution. Does someone know how to fix this? Thank you!
