In one of my games a player is roleplaying a dagger thrower, hes a lvl 5 fighter, i reward him with a javelin of lightining, and he ask me if i can give him a dagger with the same powers, would that be to overpower?
Personally I would rework the numbers a little, but I don't think it is overly OP.
Maybe along the lines of... it transforms into a bolt of lightning, forming a line 2 feet wide that extends out from you to a target within 50 feet. Each creature in the line excluding you and the target must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 2d6 lightning damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The lightning bolt turns back into a dagger when it reaches the target. Make a ranged weapon attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes damage from the dagger plus 3d6 lightning damage.
Use your imagination and enjoy.

Perpetually annoyed that Eldritch Knights can't use Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Smite, and Eldritch Sight.

i think the only reason he asked for that is because using a javalin wouldn't look cool, maybe i could say that is a dagger but use the normal javelin stats, only for roleplay, can that work?

No reason not to just give him "a dagger that functions as a javelin of lightning," especially if his (character's) shtick is using daggers.

I say, just say its a dagger of lighting, keep all the stats for balance. It's always fun to have players that want to roleplay something. If it doesn't hurt gameplay to call it a dagger, call it a dagger.
