I.m trying to figure out how to create a magic weapon in homebrew to use as a dire wolf attack when my daughter is in Wild Shape dire wolf form. She uses D&D beyond while we are playing and it would make it much easier if she can just carry on using her laptop to work out her attacks etc.
I have had 5 attempts but I can't get it to work properly, either the weapon does ranged and I can't get rid of it, or the base damage amount/type is wrong.
Why not just open another browser tab with the Dire Wolf stats?
Since dndbeyond calculates damage and to-hit according to the character's ability score a homebrew item won't work. A Greatsword would have the right damage dice, though, so you can at least use that as basis.
I might be misunderstanding the exact intent, but If you just want a custom weapon for a wild shaped character your best bet is probably to just create a copy of the beast and add it directly to the animal as an attack because any custom magic item you make will use her characters stats to calculate stuff instead of the animals. And then if you want to add more stuff to the animal you can change it there.
Either way, the easiest way to do it is to copy something and modify it, instead of creating it from scratch that way you already have all the basic stuff in place. To do that go to Collections > My Homebrew Creations > Create A... > either "Magic Item" or "Monster" > Select either "Dire Wolf" or the +1 version of whatever weapon your magic item is based on. This should open up a page where you can modify and create a new version of that Monster Item
I just realized maybe you were trying to do this through Custom Actions directly on the character sheet. If that is the case the Tool is very limited and I'm fairly sure it doesn't actually support weapons, just natural attacks, and possibly spells, so I would still suggest using an actual Homebrew item or beast
I'm trying to get it so you can use the hit dice on screen not have to jump to different pages as she is only 10 and I want to keep it as simple as possible so I want it to show in her attack options.
So I'm trying to add a bite attack to her character sheet so she can use the onscreen dice etc without having to change tabs/screens or manually look up other stats, just trying to keep the flow going as otherwise our 10 year old and 8 year old start to get distracted. I just though I might be able to create a weapon which mimics the bite of the Dire Wolf and let her equip it.
I have tried adding a custom attack but you can change to To Hit mod with that and it is showing +2 not +5, not a major deal but I just wanted to see if I could get it exactly right for her.
Ok, so I tried messing around a bit and found two possible solutions, one is easy but might need updating occasionally and displays the wrong damage type, while the other one requires more work. As you said, for some reason the to-Hit modifier can't be changed on custom actions, but it can be on custom weapons, so by giving the character a Greatsword (2d6), renaming it to Dire Wolf Bite, Setting the to-Hit override to +5 and the weight to 0, and updating the damage bonus to add up to +3 you get a Dire Wolf Bite attack that deals slashing damage.
The other way would be to create a new homebrew magic item, give it a melee piercing attack that uses no ability score, and has a set damage mod. Then you equip it and use the to-hit override and it should work perfectly. Or at least I think this procedure should work, I can't add newly created homebrew items to my characters for some reason so I can't test it, but if that doesn't work you could use a Greatsword instead of a Wondrous Item as a base and change the weapon instead of just creating an attack
Create a custom action Bite. Select Natural Attack. Select Melee. Select 2 for Dice Count. Select Die Type 6. Select Piercing Damage Type. Select Proficient. Select Display as Attack.
Close this for now. Check To Hit and Damage Bonus after the 2d6 on custom action. Select Stat and put in the one that when added to Proficiency would give you a + 5 To Hit, example: you have a 2 for Proficiency and a 16 CON score(+3 bonus). Select Fixed Value and put in a negative or positive number that sets your damage bonus so the custom Bite action shows 2d6+3.
Hi guys,

Has anyone tried or had success with this?
Thanks in advance.

You can add Wild Shape forms in the Extras tab on the character sheet and it should do all the calculations for the attacks automatically.

I've added her Dire Wolf form in the extras tab but it just brings up a reference sheet, it doesn't transfer her bite attack onto her attack options.
