In Xanathar's guide to everything, it offers an alternative item crafting option that seemingly allows a player to craft an item in a week if its cost is 50 gp or less.
My question: is the gold cost that determines duration the half price gold cost expended to create the item or is it the total handbook cost of the item in the inventory tables?
In a table I'm running, I'm considering allowing players to take the half price rather than the full gold price when determining how much they can craft in a given week. An example of this in action would be that it would allow a player with gold and downtime to create 2 potions of healing in a 5 day week.
Does this go against rules as written?
What things would a dm need to be aware of when allowing the section to be used in this way by players?
As it specifically says "gold piece cost", and doesn't specifically mention the sale price, I interpret that as referring to the half-price expenditure. The general crafting rules in the DMG are based on equating an amount of time with the material expenses needed (not the price of the finished item) so it follows that they would do the same thing here.
Matt Mercer talked about how he customizes the crafting rules at one point. The rules in the DMG are designed for extended periods of downtime, so they don't really work well when trying to craft items during normal gameplay, so he let them craft things a lot faster than RAW. The rules in XGE might be sufficient to achieve that but you may need to be flexible if players want to craft while adventuring.
