I am DMing for a group of IRL friends and we just started a new campaign. I am also pretty new to dndbeyond. One of my players is a sorcerer and I want to manually add the ability to have her do find familiar as like a cantrip because her cat recently passed away and she had it for 12 years but I wanted it to be sort of a surprise for it to be one her character sheet. I know that's long and maybe a really wordy way of putting that but I was wondering if you guys had any way to slip it on there without her noticing it https://19216801****/https://routerlogin.uno/. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
If you're in a campaign on DDB and you're the DM, you can edit players' character sheets, so you should be able to add an item or feat etc to her inventory that allows for at-will casting of find familiar or something similar.
You can add it to the character sheet by viewing the character sheet and clicking the 'Extras' tab on the far righthand side of the page. Then click 'Manage Extras' and then from the side flyout menu, use the dropdown 'Choose a Category' and select Familiar under Creature. Type cat into the 'Filter' box and click the Add button next to the cat option. It will then show up with basic stats under the 'Extras' tab on the character sheet.
You can also give the cat a name or make a few other further customizations once it's added by clicking on the Cat entry and clicking Customize in the flyout menu.
I wouldn't do it that way. Losing a pet is losing a part of a family. We have no idea how the player will react to it.
I'd have a moment with the player in game where a stay cat comes up. I'd have the locals know about it and express that the cat doesn't like people and keeps to the shadows. Have a bit of hide and seek for the player. Just to see if the player gets into it. If the player does then while bonding with the cat you can then give the find fermilliar after.
Yeah, I'd agree. People react unpredictably when dealing with a loss. Be a little gentler and give them the opportunity to accept/reject it. Also, be prepared for the possibility that they may react negatively to it. I get where you're coming from and that it's a good place, but as I said, people react unpredictably to these kinds of things. It could well be that they'll love it...but no matter how well you know them, they could be made uncomfortable by it or get angry. Probably not, but you need to be prepared just in case.
