In the area for managing proficiencies, I read that you can add to the list, at least to some degree, when your GM deems you worthy. Does manually adding a proficiency mechanically change your characters ability, or would the player need to remember that stat?
Perhaps a better question would be, where can I find helpful information on the mechanics of the D&D Beyond character sheet. I would like a more in depth understanding of it.
Basically a skill proficiency is just whether you add your proficiency bonus to a specific use of an ability check.
A custom skill doesn't change any of your abilities or bonuses, just the modifier to 1 very specific type of roll.
You could for example make a "thieves tools" skill to automatically roll that. Or a strength intimidation if your character makes threats with presence instead if words.
You can also customize existing proficiencies if some boon is giving you a bonus for example.

Thank you, and roll high.
