D&D Beyond enables online play, such as for Lost Mines of Phandelver, in the following ways:
Digital tools
Content sharing (to let your players access the content you've bought and vice versa)
Play-by-post forums
Game rooms on the D&D Beyond discord server
DDB doesn't currently have any VTT-like services, such as those offered by roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry, Astral or other such providers, if that's what you're asking about. It's on the long term roadmap, but that's all we know regarding that feature.
DnDBeyond is a tool for managing your campaign, NPCs, players, and various other tools to make the game easier and more accessabile. (once you understand the layout)
To actually play people use discord, zoom, google hangouts, etc, for video and voice chat; mixed with either roll20, fantasy grounds, virtual table top, or a few others for maps and movable pawns/pieces for combat.
It's a bit much in my opinion. Way bigger learning curve when playing online compared to sitting around a table in real life.
Question - When you purchase Lost Mine of Phandelver or any other adventures on DND Beyond do you need to create your own encounters? I ask because I am new to DND Beyond and recently bought a couple of adventures I noticed there were no encounters? I thought the entire point of purchasing the online adventures was that they came with all the material premade as part of a 'complete' adventure?

Currently yes, you do need to reproduce the encounters in the encounter builder

Ideally, I think premade encounters would be part of the service, but it's not. What you're paying for on DDB, is:
Easy access to stat-blocks.
The ability to create encounters using those stat-blocks.
Access to the text of books in digital form.
Easy character creation.
You still have to create the encounters yourself. If they do decide to do premade encounters for the published adventures, it won't be until 1D&D releases at the earliest. I've not seen any indication it is even in the works, though.

Hope this helps.
