Baldur's Gate 3 is quite possibly the biggest thing to happen to DND in computer game form ever.
It is also my understanding that Larian is developing the game with the full blessing of WOTC.
I have used the character tool here to recreate the starting companions as DNDB has the ultimate tool set.
I would love to see an integration with BG3 that would allow us to manage our characters here as well as in game. Personally the BG3 character management tool leave things to be desired.
Yeah, really doubt that's going to happen. The game is officially licensed, that's how it's able to be set in the Forgotten Realms, after all. But I suspect that it's going to be its own thing.
Also, I don't know if it's the biggest thing to happen to D&D in computer form ever. The original Baldur's Gate was one of two games (the other being Fallout) that are credited as having saved the viability of non-Japanese CRPGs back in the 90s.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
BG3 is based on the 5e rules, but it isn't using the 5e rules exactly. For a simple example, there's no Path of the Wildheart Barbarian in 5e, but there is one in BG3.
Because of that, I don't think it would really serve the role you're imagining for it. And even if it did.. I sure wouldn't use it. Having to go into another application with another account to manage my characters? Having them be always online? No thanks.
