I've read the Gate Warden background and I don't think it's very clear on what exactly a gate warden is. I imagine its someone who guards one of the portals in or around Sigil, but I have no idea. Does anyone have a more definitive answer or explaination?
I am guessing it is intentionally left a bit vague so you can use it on other planes (for example, Eberron has folks who stand watch for planar shenanigans). As such, you can have it be whatever works for your particular game.
i'm with op, the article makes it seem vague beyond reason. the lore there seems to say you're just chill with regards to eclectic neighbors and pizza rat. on the other hand, 'warden' suggests guarding or protecting.
the difference between border patrol or a tea-sipping people watcher seems broad enough for two separate backgrounds.

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: providefeedback!
In terms of the book itself, it’s essentially the same as Planar Philosopher, with one covering Sigil residents and one covering Outlands residents. It’s not particularly in-depth, but then they’ve already made it clear that going forward “background” doesn’t actually hold hard game significance. Note the lack of even more than a single table of character creation prompts.
