My players are traveling through a snowy mountain pass and I want to throw a environmental encounter at them that challenges their problem solving and presents as a dangerous obstacle. I am thinking...rickety bridge, blizzard, etc...I have an avalanche scenario planned for later on but for now I want to give them a sense of the environment while posing a problem to solve.
I always love a dex-based frozen lake/body of water style scenario. Balancing heavier weight characters and spreading out PC's to avoid the thinner icy parts of a body of water from cracking. The danger of a lake of unknown depth is also great for tension and it can be as deep as you like to make it more deadly or less deadly etc.
Also a great battleground for a weak mobs ambush... but that's next level.

Any Ideas?
Here is an example of a visual I have in mind...
Counter-intuitive, but Brown Mold is terrifying. Cold keeps it in check, and extreme cold kills it. Heat makes it grow at ungodly rates. It does crazy amounts of cold damage.
Thanks for all the suggestions ...( This is the official DnD Community forums right ???). I came up with an idea and think Ill run with it. Ill let you know how it plays out.
Frozen Terror
The players continue their journey towards Cairn Bavan and stumble across a young dwarven boy being tormented by a group of Ice Mephits…
"The wind surrounding you has started to grow angrier and angrier with each passing hour until finally you have found yourselves engulfed in a fury of snow and air.Your lungs are filled with the biting coldness of a blizzard that now clings to you like a giant beast assaulting and blinding you with every step…In the midst of this you suddenly hear a frantic voice calling out for help somewhere ahead of you…"
Ahead of the players in the midst of a brewing blizzard is a small Dwarven boy being pursued by a pair of Ice Mephits and their “owner” a young Bheur Hag.
She has left her lair with her “pets” and went looking for food. The young dwarf got separated from his fathers hunting party when the blizzard started brewing and is lost and frightened.
The boy will call out to anyone in the vicinity and is trying to climb a tree to escape his fate. When the players arrive on the scene they can only hear his voice but not see what is going on do to the blizzard. Visibility is limited to 10 foot radius around each player. If the players are in a group then that radius is combined.
The Mephits will become aware of the players the moment they get within 20 feet of them. The Bheur will be aware of them the moment they start to move towards her direction. She can smell them through the blizzard and will order her pets to round up the fresh meat. The Mephits will move towards the players, stalking them through the blizzard in hopes of ambushing them. When the Mephits get adjacent to a player it will attack with surprise.
